In 1720 Shumboku Ōoka edited a picture book entitled Ehon Tekagami Wakan Meihitsu (i.e., Picture Book of Painting Models by Distinguished Japanese and Chinese Brushes). It included the twenty-seven pictures of flowers and (or) birds shown in this gallery, each drawn by a celebrated Japanese artist. Click on a picture to enlarge it. These artists used a number of different painting styles but the process of copying the original painting and printing it in only shades of gray has minimized these differences.
